Lanthanum Hexaboride Cathode, Lab6 Cathode

Lanthanum Hexaboride Cathode, Lab6 Cathode

Lanthanum hexaboride (LaB6) cathodes are a type of electron emitter used in electron microscopes, X-ray generators, and other vacuum electronics applications. LaB6 cathodes are known for their high brightness, long lifetime, and low work function, which makes them highly efficient at emitting electrons.

LaB6 cathodes are made by pressing and sintering LaB6 powder into a cylindrical shape, which is then mounted into a cathode assembly. The LaB6 material is highly refractory, with a melting point of over 2500°C, and is resistant to oxidation and chemical attack.

LaB6 cathodes can be operated at high temperatures, up to 1900°C, and at high current densities, making them suitable for demanding applications such as electron beam lithography and materials analysis. They are also used in scanning electron microscopes (SEMs) and transmission electron microscopes (TEMs) due to their high brightness and low energy spread, which results in improved resolution and image quality.
