Gadolinium(III) chloride hexahydrate (GdCl3 · 6H2O) is a white crystalline powder with the chemical formula GdCl3 · 6H2O. It is a hydrated salt of gadolinium and chloride ions.
Gadolinium(III) chloride hexahydrate is used as a raw material for the production of other gadolinium compounds, and as a contrast agent in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for medical diagnosis. It is also used as a dopant in the production of phosphors for lighting and display applications, and in the preparation of certain ceramic materials.
In addition to its industrial and medical applications, gadolinium(III) chloride hexahydrate has some potential uses in nuclear energy. It has been studied for its use in nuclear reactors as a neutron absorber, and as a potential material for fuel in some advanced nuclear reactor designs.
