Description

Yttrium(III) nitrate hexahydrate (Y(NO3)3 · 6H2O) is a crystalline powder that is a hydrate of yttrium nitrate. It is commonly used as a precursor for the production of other yttrium compounds, such as yttrium oxide, yttrium hydroxide, and yttrium fluoride.

Yttrium(III) nitrate hexahydrate is soluble in water and ethanol, but insoluble in ether. It is a strong oxidizing agent and should be handled with care. It is used in the preparation of ceramics, as a catalyst in some organic reactions, and in the production of phosphors for television tubes.

Yttrium(III) nitrate hexahydrate should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from heat sources and incompatible materials. Proper protective equipment, such as gloves and safety goggles, should be worn when handling this material.
