Description

Lutetium(III) nitrate hydrate (Lu(NO3)3·xH2O) is a crystalline powder that is a hydrate of lutetium nitrate. It is commonly used as a precursor for the production of other lutetium compounds, such as lutetium oxide and lutetium fluoride.

Lutetium(III) nitrate hydrate is soluble in water and ethanol, but insoluble in ether. It is a strong oxidizing agent and should be handled with care. It is used in the preparation of catalysts, in chemical research, and in the production of electronics.

Lutetium(III) nitrate hydrate should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from heat sources and incompatible materials. Proper protective equipment, such as gloves and safety goggles, should be worn when handling this material.

 Application

Lutetium Nitrate is the important raw material for laser crystal, and also has specialized uses in ceramics, glass, phosphors, lasers. It is the ideal host for x-ray phosphors because it produces the densest known white material, Lutetium Tantalate(LuTaO4). Stable Lutetium can be used as catalysts in petroleum cracking in refineries and can also be used in alkylation, hydrogenation, and polymerization applications. It can also be used as an ideal host for X-ray phosphors.

Lutetium(III) nitrate hydrate is used in ceramics, glass, phosphors and in lasers. It finds application as a catalyst in petroleum cracking and to prepare laser crystals. Further, it is used in hydrogenation, alkylation and polymerization reactions.
