Dysprosium Oxide Powder (Dy2O3), CAS 1308-87-8

Dysprosium oxide powder (Dy2O3) is a white powder that is commonly used as a raw material for the production of other dysprosium compounds, such as dysprosium metal, dysprosium fluoride, and dysprosium nitrate.

Dysprosium oxide is insoluble in water, but soluble in acids. It has a high melting point of 2,400 °C and a high thermal conductivity, making it useful in high-temperature applications. It is also used as a yellow phosphor in television screens and as a dopant in the production of solid-state lasers.

Dysprosium oxide powder should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from heat sources and incompatible materials. Proper protective equipment, such as gloves and safety goggles, should be worn when handling this material.

Applications

Dysprosium Oxide is the main raw material for Dysprosium Metal which is widely used in Neodymium-Iron-Boron magnets, also has specialized uses in ceramics, glass, phosphors, lasers, and Dysprosium Metal halide lamps. High purity of Dysprosium Oxide is used in the electronics industry as an antireflection coating in photoelectric devices. Because of dysprosium's high thermal-neutron absorption cross-section, Dysprosium-Oxide–Nickel cermets are used in neutron-absorbing control rods in nuclear reactors. Dysprosium and its compounds are highly susceptible to magnetization, they are employed in various data-storage applications, such as in hard disks.
