Lutetium oxide powder (Lu2O3) is a white powder that is commonly used as a raw material for the production of other lutetium compounds, such as lutetium metal, lutetium fluoride, and lutetium nitrate.

Lutetium oxide is insoluble in water, but soluble in acids. It has a high melting point of 2,425 °C and a high thermal conductivity, making it useful in high-temperature applications. It is also used as a phosphor in television screens, as a catalyst in various chemical reactions, and as a dopant in the production of solid-state lasers.

Lutetium oxide powder should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from heat sources and incompatible materials. Proper protective equipment, such as gloves and safety goggles, should be worn when handling this material.

Application

Lutetium Oxide, also called Lutecia, is an important raw material for laser crystals, and also has specialized uses in ceramics, glass, phosphors, lasers. Lutetium Oxide also is used as catalysts in cracking, alkylation, hydrogenation, and polymerization. Stable Lutetium can be used as catalysts in petroleum cracking in refineries and can also be used in alkylation, hydrogenation, and polymerization applications. It can also be used as an ideal host for X-ray phosphors.

Lutetium(III) oxide is an important raw material for laser crystals. It also has specialized uses in ceramics, glass, phosphors, and lasers. Lutetium(III) oxide is used as a catalyst in cracking, alkylation, hydrogenation, and polymerization. The bandgap of lutetium oxide is 5.5 eV.
